15-03-08: CONWY BOROUGH VS COLWYN BAY FC
Colwyn Bay’s Youth team continue to impress as they took a very professional approach to their match against Conwy Borough. It must be said that the playing surface was one that most UniBond league clubs could only aspire to have, perfectly level and apart from a small amount of wear in the goal mouths, in perfect condition. A surface that would really suit Colwyn Bay’s passing game.
Colwyn Bay started with their mean 5-3-2 formation as they went out to give nothing away from the start. Williams instructed his wingbacks and midfielders to gamble more and get forward quicker. After only five minutes, this was to pay dividends as Colwyn Bay broke down the left channel. Brandon Simpson, in for Jordan Phillips, kept his run going down the right side and as the keeper spilled a Jack Jenkins effort, Brandon arrived at the far post to slot low under the keeper and into the net to put the Bay one up.
Ten minutes later, Steven Jackson doubled the Bay’s lead when Conwy failed to deal with his pace as he darted in at the near post to head home a great cross from Andrew Farrugia on the left side.
Tom Evans was to get in on the act on the half hour mark when he collected the ball out wide on the left. He stepped inside his marker before rifling his shot goal bound. The keeper made a great attempt to save it, but could only get his fingers to it as it whistled just inside the near upright to put the Bay three up.
Just before the break, Mike Hodgson was brought down in the box. The official had no hesitation pointing to the spot. Kyle Jones stepped up to take it, but in his eagerness, forgot to wait for the whistle as he fired it past the keeper. The official asked for the re-take. This time, Kyle smashed his effort against the crossbar before heading his own effort home. Unfortunately, another player didn’t touch the ball, so his effort didn’t count.
Half Time 3-0
With the game relatively safe, Williams used the second half to experiment. Kyle was moved from his sweeper role into the middle of the park, while Mike Hodgson moved into the defence. Ethan Morris picked up Kyle’s position. Although Colwyn Bay looked even more dangerous going forward, there were holes appearing at the back. Conwy started to press the Bay back and after ten minutes, pulled a goal back with a fantastic effort from the edge of the box. Colwyn Bay restored their three goal advantage soon after with a Tom Evans corner. Conwy failed to clear the ball and it was played back out to Tom who put the ball on a plate for Steven Jackson to fire home from close range.
Colwyn Bay gave the ball away cheaply in the penalty area and Conwy forced the ball home for their second of the game. Williams moved Kyle back into his sweeper role for the last ten minutes to settle any nerves and let Ethan Morris move into the midfield. This brought instant success as it was Ethan’s diagonal ball that set up Steven Jackson to race through and collect Ethan’s cross and fire into the net for his hatrick and MOM award.
Talking to his squad after the game, Williams congratulated them on their displays of late and expects this year’s player of the year to be a close call with so many good consistent performances on show.
Full Time 5-2
01-03-08: COLWYN BAY FC vs. LLYSFAEN LEAPORDS
Colwyn Bay were up against the oldest team in the division as it was agreed that Llysfaen would remain in the lower division. After the previous weeks win, confidence was high going into today’s game and the squad were hopeful that they may sneak a point against a much bigger and stronger opposition.
With the wind in their faces and playing up the hill, Colwyn Bay battled hard in the first half, but struggled to settle against the stronger team in the mud that is Glan y Don! Hodgson and Williams both believed that if the squad could hold Llysfaen to three goals by half time, they would be able to pull it back in the second half. Unfortunately, Llysfaen went one better as they slotted four past the Bay.
Half Time 0-4
Colwyn Bay got at Llysfaen from the off in the second half, but as they threw men forward, they got caught on the counter and fell further behind with a well taken strike from the Llysfaen striker. Colwyn bay hit back immediately as Jordan Phillips floated a great ball into the box. Oliver Edwards was first to react as he headed the ball over the oncoming keeper and into the net.
Ten minutes later Colwyn Bay lessened the gap further after Andrew Farrugia and Tom Evans worked a brilliant move down the left channel before Tom rifled a cross right across the face of goal. Oliver Edwards raced in at the far post and slid the ball over the line. With Colwyn bay on top in all departments except for the score line, it was Llysfaen who got a lucky break as a long clearance rose above the keeper before getting caught on a gust of wind, pushing the ball down under the cross bar.
As the game entered the final stages, the Llysfaen fullback got caught in possession as he tried to see out a ball for a goal kick out by the corner flag. Oliver wrapped his leg around the full back and managed to get his foot to the ball. With a vicious spin on the ball, it bounced harmlessly at the near post before shooting off at the strangest of angles straight past the keeper and into the net.
Hodgson said after the game” They (The Bay) battled well, but Llysfaen proved to be just too physically strong for our younger squad”. Williams added “I’m very proud of the squad’s attitude today. I really don’t think there was anything more I could have asked of them. They battled all over the park, but just didn’t have the physical strength to compete”.
Final Score 3-6
23-02-08: COLWYN BAY FC vs. LLANFAIRFECHAN TOWN
With the leagues now split into two divisions, which are basically the under 14's grouped together in division two, while the under 15's are grouped in division one, Colwyn Bay are looking to climb the table and push the leaders for one of the top spots. "The season starts today" stated Mark Hodgson as the Bay were out to avenge the defeat they suffered at the hands of Llanfairfechan earlier in the season.
With Mark Williams sticking with a new formation and line up that has only been tested in friendlies, he later admitted he was slightly nervous of how the players would respond. "We are looking to turn defence into attack much quicker as scoring goals has been an issue for us this season" said Williams. He went on to say " We have tried a couple of different line ups and formations recently during the season break with a friendly. Although we lost the friendly, we learnt a lot about what style suits us and how we want to go forward with the rest of the season".
The squad were certainly up for it as they produced a dominant display, even though they had key players missing. Defending the hill and the wind, manager Mark Williams changed the formation to keep everything tight at the back. This worked a treat as Llanfairfechan were reduced to one long range effort and two corners for the full first half. With only two minutes of the first half remaining, Colwyn Bay were rewarded for their dogged determination when Jack Jenkins latched onto a long through ball from Tom Evans. He beat the centre half before drawing the keeper off his line, then sending the ball just inside the right upright.
Half Time 1-0
Now with the wind and the hill on their side, the squad set themselves up with a very attacking formation and had Llanfairfechan on the back foot throughout.
With Kyle Jones, James Greenwood-Wynn and Ethan Morris snuffing out any danger at the back, John Dowd was left redundant between the sticks. Jordan Phillips and Steven Jackson were running the show up front and it was half way through the half that Jordan, not for the first time, sent the pacey Steven through. He beat everyone for pace and slotted home under the keeper.
With five minutes to go, it was Brandon Simpson who chased down a thankless ball down the right channel. He launched himself at the ball just as it was going out of play and with just one touch, somehow managed to drag it back to the far post where Steven Jackson arrived to score his second of the game with a low drive under the oncoming keeper.
Full Time 3-0
17-02-08: NEW YEAR PUSH BEGINS HERE
Mark Williams and Mark Hodgson are confident now that the leagues have been split into the correct age groups, they can push Colwyn Bay's under 14's up the table.
Williams stated "The season starts here for our squad. We have had a miserable time having to play against squads that in some cases were nearly two years older than ourselves". Hodgson added "Looking at how the division has been split, we are more than capeable of getting into the top two or three positions"
01-08-07: NEW SEASON GETS UNDERWAY
Colwyn Bay under 14’s have just started their fourth season of football in the Aberconwy and Colwyn District Junior League. After some pre season trials, a squad of eighteen players has been put together for the 2007/08 season. Due to their young age, they will remain as an under 14’s squad, but will have to play in an under 15's league. This does mean that this season will be extremely tough for the under 14’s, but in the long run manager Mark Williams and his assistant Mark Hodgson believe that the squad will be stronger next season for it. Mark Williams said "With playing in an under 15's league, I am well within my rights to bring in older players, but as I would have to release them next year, I really don't care to upset the current squad just to finish a few points better off. We have already played two teams this season which have installed six or seven under 15's players. In both cases, our squad did extremely well until the strength of the older boys showed in the latter stages of the match. In both cases, the opposing manager saw fit to leave the younger boys on the bench leaving them with little pitch time. I struggle to see how this helps with their development in football.”
Colwyn Bay’s home games are played at Glan y Don, but have the option of using Llanelian road if available. Summer training sessions also take place at Glan y Don, while during the winter months; training takes place at the astro turf in Eirias Park.
The squad play in replica Colwyn Bay kits, which have been kindly sponsored by ‘The Toning Centre’ of Colwyn Bay, while the tracksuits have been kindly sponsored by ‘Anthony Flint Estate Agents’. In a very generous offer, Anthony Flint Estate Agents have also offered to sponsor this season’s water bottles as well as corner flags. The match balls for this season have been sponsored by ‘The Central’ in Colwyn Bay.
