TWO second half goals ended hopes of a winning start for caretaker bosses Carl Rodgers and Luke Denson as the Seagulls failed to defend a half-time lead and lost 2-1 at home to to Mickleover Sports (March 31).
They made a great start to the game and were a goal up after just four minutes when Luke Denson won the ball well on the half-way line and sprinted forward before crossing low for Carl Lamb to score.
They were further boosted when Craig Ellison saved a 17th minute penalty from Mickleover’s Zeph Thomas following a rash tackle in the area, but Colwyn Bay couldn’t build on that.
In the second half Ellison made another excellent diving save from Thomas, who was then unlucky when his chip over the keeper hit a post and rebounded clear, but the equaliser came on 65 minutes when Jake Green made the most of hesitancy in the Bay area – and eight minutes later the visitors were in front.
Long balls through the middle, for Mickleover’s speedy forwards to run onto, were starting to creating more and more openings for the visitors and when Ellison raced out of his area to prevent Thomas racing onto just such a ball, his poor clearance went straight to Andy Dales who hit a first time shot from 40 yards past the stranded keeper and into an unguarded net.
Apart from a shot by Adam Morgan that was just too high, Colwyn Bay created very little up front in the second half and with Marine winning away to Barwell the Seagulls slipped ten points adrift of the safety zone with just seven games left.
