Kieran Wolland made a fine penalty save to set up Bay’s progress to the quarter-finals

THE Seagulls won a penalty shoot-out 5-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Integro Doodson League Cup after a 1-1 draw with Trafford.

The Division One North side equalised deep into added time at the end of the game after Carl Lamb had given Colwyn Bay a 10th minute lead.

In the shoot-out, the first four penalty takers for each side found the net before Kieran Wolland made a super one-handed save from Andrew Langford’s kick to set up the chance for Jack Kelleher to hit the tie winning spot kick.

Luke Denson, Johnny Gorman (making his debut), Jordan Harper and Bradley Bauress were the other successful Bay penalty takers.

After starting well and taking the lead when Lamb scored from close range following a cross by Gorman, the Seagulls struggled after first half injuries to Steve Wilson (hamstring) and Lamb (hip), and in the second half also had to face a  strong wind which suddenly blew up from nowhere and made it difficult for Wolland to reach the half-way line with his kicks.

Shaun Dowling was also struggling with a knee injury.

Even so the Bay had chances to wrap the tie up, only for Trafford keeper Russell Saunders to make three fine saves late on to deny Gorman (twice) and substitute Sean Sheridan.

Trafford then equalised three minutes into added time with a header from  Langford to force the penalty decider.

Bay boss Kevin Lynch was forced to make changes due to players being cup-tied, injured or with work commitments, and after a good start, felt the side lost their shape a bit after the two first half injuries.

“The injuries disrupted us in midfield and we never quite recovered,” he said. “It was also difficult against the elements in the second half, but the positives are that we achieved  our objective to get through to the last eight and we were able to give Sean Sheridan (from the reserves) a run out and he could have capped his night with a goal with the chance he had at the end.”

With Darlington and Workington both going out of the competition on the night, none of the top 12 sides in the Premier Division will be in the quarter-final draw.
