Kev Holsgrove scored second half equaliser to take the tie to penalties

THE Seagulls are through to the second round of the Integro Doodson League Cup after winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3 at Hyde United.

After trailing to a 23rd minute goal by Ayrton Bevins,  Kevin Holsgrove hit a 64th minute equaliser and later also hit a post as the teams finished level at 1-1 after 90 minutes, with the Bay putting in a spirited performance.

Although the league rules say the tie should then go straight to penalties, the referee mistakenly started to play extra time in which Shaun Tuck, who made a big impression when he came on as a first half substitute for injured Danny Reynolds, rounded the keeper to put the Bay 2-1 up from Josh Sumner’s excellent pass, before the referee was informed of his error. He then abandoned extra time after seven minutes had been played and switched to a penalty decider.

Bay keeper Shaun Pearson then made two fine saves from Scott Spencer and Peter Boyle, while the Seagulls secured their place in the second round with John Marsden, Glenn Matthews, Shaun Tuck and Luke Denson all successful from the spot.

The next round is away to Radcliffe Borough on Tuesday January 12.

Colwyn Bay: Shaun Pearson, Shaun Dowling, Mike Lea, Will Bell, Jordan Fagbola, John Marsden, Cory Williams (Josh Sumner 64mins). John Dillon, Kevin Holsgrove (Luke Denson 79 minutes), Danny Reynolds (Shaun Tuck 38mins), Glenn Matthews. Subs not used: Antonie Boland and Joe Newton.

Attendance: 86.
