TWO goals in each half gave the Seagulls 4-1 victory over North West Counties side Runcorn Town (July 18) to provide their first win in their pre-season programme.
Seven players that started last Saturday’s game against Curzon Ashton were on the bench for this game, but the much-changed Bay side still dominated the first half.
Danny Andrews opened the scoring after 12 minutes as he latched onto a long ball to beat former Bay keeper Andy Metcalfe.
Andrews then turned provider by playing in Jamie Rainford for a second goal on 32 minutes.
Metcalfe made two or three good saves to prevent further goals before half-time.
In the second half Runcorn came back strongly, pulled a goal back through Mark Reed and were looking the better side for a spell before a raft of changes, with Dan Collins, Kyle Jacobs, Luke Horrocks, Shaun Holden, Danny Bartle and Anthony Griffith all coming off the bench, saw the Bay regain control.
Those changes also included a run out for new physio Tom Rutter (ex-Vauxhall Motors winger) and he celebrated by scoring the third goal.
Played in by Bartle’s pass, he got a rebound off the advancing substitute keeper before running the ball into an empty net.
Right at the end of the game Danny Bartle beat the keeper with an angled shot for Bay’s fourth.
Ex-Bay defender Danny Jarrett made a brief appearance for Runcorn in last 10 minutes.
Jack Kelleher missed the game due to holidays, while Jack Hindle, Gaz Grant and Gaz Burnett are all injured.
The Bay now face two tough tests in the space of five days against teams that have just represented Wales in the Europa League qualifiers. They entertain Bangor City on Friday (July 21) and then host Connah’s Quay Nomads next Tuesday (July 25).
The squad that played Runcorn Town were: Kris Leigh, Josh Brizell, Louis Barnes, Will Booth, Sam Barnes, Natt Kerr, Mike Pino, Mike Bellew, Jamie Rainford, Danny Andrews, Astley Mulholland, Tom Rutter, Luke Horrocks, Anthony Griffith, Dan Collins, Danny Bartle, Kyle Jacobs, Shaun Holden, Matt Cooper.
