THE Seagulls were denied victory by a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Irlam in their second pre-season friendly.

Danny Andrews came closest to scoring in a scrappy first half when he broke into the area and his goal bound shot was tipped onto a post by the diving home keeper.

Colwyn Bay then took the lead on 54 minutes with Gaz Burnett’s shot following a corner and were unlucky not to double their lead two minutes later when Will Booth’s shot rebounded off a post.

But Irlam equalised on 77 minutes with a cool finish inside the area by Jordan Icely.

In the closing minutes Burnett chipped over the keeper only to see a defender get back to clear off the line and in the last minute Burnett had the ball in the Irlam net again from Andrews’ low cross, only for the flag to go up for offside.

At the other end Bay keeper Simon Williams, in his first full game, made a couple of brave saves at the feet of onrushing Irlam forwards.

Manager Paul Moore said afterwards he was relatively happy with things at the moment although there is clearly work to be done.

“We are not settled yet as a squad with people being away and the chopping and changing we’ve done to look at different players and different ways of playing.

“I changed our formation three times tonight to give lads games and there is going to be more chopping and changing for the next couple of games. But then it will settle down.

” I know what my final squad is going to be and when they are all available and we get a run of games with a settled, stable side, then you will see a difference.

“Tonight there was some  really good positives, but also some really poor decision making – but pre-season is about ironing these things out.

“Everybody wants to win every game 5-0, but sometimes its better to see things now that can be worked on rather than walking through pre-season games thinking everything is rosy and then when the season starts it falls down.

“At the moment I am relatively happy with where we are and I’m more than happy with the squad of players, who will improve as they get fitter and sharper.”

Luke Denson is back from holiday this week and will be involved for the first time on Saturday against Northwich, but Mark Keddie is still struggling with a knee strain and had to pull out of the Irlam game at the last minute after feeling the injury in the pre-match warm up.

“He probably needs another couple of weeks and there is no point in taking risks with him at this stage,” added the manager.
