THE Reserves, after dominating much of the possession, gifted Llanrug United the lead and then suffered a second half collapse as they crumbed to a disappointing 5-1 home defeat in their latest game in the Welsh Alliance Reserve Division (January 28).
They missed two or three opportunities to score before keeper Matt Brookes allowed a shot to slip through his hands to gift Llanrug the lead against the run of play.
The visitors then added a second with a header following a set piece, but Colwyn Bay looked to have got themselves back in the game when Jack Nettleton scored with a neat finish just before half-time.
The Bay pressed hard and missed two good opportunities to equalise at the start of the second half, but Llanrug then broke with a long ball over the top of Bay’s defence to score a third.
Brookes made a fine save to keep out the first effort, but had no chance as Llanrug scored from the rebound.
Brookes made an excellent diving one handed save to keep out another goalbound effort, but minutes later Llanrug added a fourth from a free kick, with a big deflection off the defensive wall leaving Brookes wrong-footed.
Late in the game Llanrug broke out again to add a fifth with another shot from a rebound following another good block by the keeper.
Manager James Perkins commented: “I thought our first half performance was excellent with the way we dominated territorially and controlled the game, and it was hard to believe that we were behind at half-time.
“The second half collapse came out of nowhere. We simply weren’t good enough. We let ourselves down and didn’t respond at all well to conceding the third goal.
“The players share both my frustration and disappointment and we are all desperate to put things right against Llanrwst next weekend.”
