Own goal sinks Seagulls

AN own goal by Jordan Fagbola saw the Seagulls lose their opening league game at Halesowen 1-0.
With his back to goal he tried to back-head the ball from a long kick by the home keeper to Chris Sanna, but the Bay keeper had come off his line to gather it and the ball looped over him off Fagbola’s head into the net.
Colwyn Bay had more of the attacking play for most of the game and should have equalised on 58 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for a push on Cory Williams, but Chris Sharp’s spot kick was superbly saved by keeper Matt Sargeant diving to his right.
The Bay had a number of other chances, but a Rob Hopley header which was cleared off the line was the closest they came, while too many other efforts were off target on a day when neither side looked capable of scoring.
Sharp, apart from the penalty, shot high or wide from two other good second half chances and on another day could have had a hat-trick.
Sanna did make a fine save in a one-on-one situation late in the game, but apart from that he hardly had a shot to save.
Manager Ash Hoskin admitted he was “bitterly disappointed”, both with the goal and the penalty miss.
“We knew their keeper would hit long balls to the edge of our box in the opening 15 minutes or so and we needed to stay strong. Chris has shouted “keepers” as he has come out to take the ball, but Jordan’s back headed it over him and that’s a very disappointing goal to give away.
“After that I think we’ve created enough to have travelled home with a point, but if you miss penalties you don’t deserve anything.
“I think that was a massive turning point. They were dropping deeper and deeper and we were winning the ball and causing them problems. If we’d scored the penalty I think we would have gone on to win, but the keeper’s save gave them and their crowd a massive lift and helped them see out the game.”
Luke Denson suffered a dead leg in the second half and could be a doubt for Tuesday’s game at home to Hyde.
