COLWYN BAY have completed the signing of  highly rated 19-year-old goalkeeper Russell Griffiths from Premiership club Everton ahead of tonight’s home game against FA Cup conquerors Workington (September 22nd, 7.45pm).

Griffiths  captained Everton’s Under-18 side to the Barclay’s U18 League championship last season and has twice been on the bench for first team games. He was also a member of the England Under-20 squad that played the Czech Republic in an international at Shrewsbury last week.

He has just been on loan to Northwich Victoria where he kept five clean sheets in seven games to help the Cheshire side  go top of the Evostik Division One North.

Manager Ash Hoskin commented: “I know the Northwich manager Jim Gannon very well and he says those clean sheets were down to Russell being very good at his job.”

Other new signings Glenn Matthews and Southport loanee Mike Brewster, who both played in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Matlock Town, are  also set for their home debuts against Workington.

The Seagulls are still smarting from that 5-0 cup defeat at Workington, but the manager said: “We were so short of players that day, due to injuries, we had to put square pegs in round holes just to put out a team  – and we got hammered. However,  I still believe once we get all our injured players back, plus the new additions we have made in the past week, we can be a match for anyone at this level.”

The manager will need a late check to see if Kevin Holsgrove has recovered from a sprained ankle, but Sam Barnes and Luke Denson will both be missing again.
