Colwyn Bay Football Club Academy

The Colwyn Bay Football Club Academy is now into its 4th Season. In the time since it started there has been a steady increase in both the number of Academy players – we currently have around 90 – and of the standard of the football that our teams are playing. Many North Wales academies are long established and it has taken some time to ensure that we are competitive at all levels, but we are pleased that this is now the case. We currently train in a number of venues, including Erias Park, Llandrillo College and Betws-yn-Rhos Sports Association.

Since it started our Academy Director has been Chris Thompson. We are pleased to have an excellent group of committed and well qualified coaches and volunteers who work under his supervision. The long term aim of the Academy is to develop players who can reach their potential and, hopefully, go on to represent Colwyn Bay. One step in this direction is the aim to run an Under 18’s team in the season 2018/19, with the players for the team coming mainly from within the Academy.

The newly formed U8’s have had a tough start to the season and it has been a steep learning curve for all of us. However the boys have played some really good football when in possession and have endeavoured to play open attacking football in each game. The whole squad is now getting used to the step up in level and they were extremely competitive in patches in defeat to Caernarfon, which was followed up by a deserved and convincing away win at Airbus in their last game.

It’s been a really positive start to the season for the U9’s. A number of players have been added following a busy trial period over the summer which has given us a competitive squad. Performances have been improving with the new and old players becoming a team. They are now producing good football in all of the games we’ve played….looking forward to a strong second half of the season.

After a slow start to the season, the U12’s have really started to play well the last few games with a couple of very good results which has been great for the players’ confidence and has attracted new players which have further strengthened the squad. Looking forward to the second part of the season and the upcoming Academy Futsal competition.

The U14’s this year have been playing a year up. It’s been a tough year for them but should hopefully stand them in good stead for next season.

All age groups are now finishing the first round of games and we all compete in the futsal over the winter period. We look forward to building on what we have already developed and looking to move forward and make more progression during 2018.
