COLWYN BAY FC have this week received the go ahead from the local council to stage a Gary Speed Memorial 10K run in the town on World Cup Final day.
The former Wales international and manager’s father, Roger, is Patron of the Seagulls and he and his wife Carol have given their permission for the event to be held in memory of their late son who made his name playing with Everton, Leeds and Newcastle United.
The 10k run will start and finish at Colwyn Bay’s Llanelian Road ground on Sunday July 13 and is open to fun runners as well as serious competitors.
Football fans who would like to take part are encouraged to wear their team’s shirt so as many football clubs as possible are represented.
Entrance fee for the run will be £10 and runners will also be invited to raise money for charities through sponsorship.
Strathmore Water, official suppliers for the Commonwealth Games, have already agreed to be involved.
Author and comedian John Martin, who is vice-President of Colwyn Bay FC and a close friend of the Speed family commented: “From the initial reaction I’ve had It promises to be huge and could become an annual event in the town as a tribute to a great North Wales sports star
“The plan is for this year’s event to be part of a full weekend of activities at the football club to coincide with the World Cup final, which will be shown on the big screen in the clubhouse later.”
John Martin added: “Runners will be encouraged to raise money by sponsorship for charities as Gary was a great supporter of charitable events.”

IF the Boston United game goes ahead tomorrow, Chairman David Messom has issued a rallying to all supporters:
” With the club only gaining income from home matches, but having to pay the players every week, irrespective as to whether we play or not, it has put the club in a very serious financial position, shared by many other Conference North clubs, but even so, the directors cannot continue to bail out the club from their own pockets, and we desperately need to get home games played, and ask supporters to give us their maximum help during these next 2 months, by at the very least coming to games when they are on in greater numbers than have been seen so far. “
The club have introduced several initiatives to try and entice more fans to the Home Matches including With every paying adult – 1 child gains free entry and any student providing a valid Student/NUS card can gain entrance to the club for just £3!
Bar will be open showing the live scores and BT Sport coverage. with a Pre Match Deal of Pie, Chips Peas and a Pint for £5!
The Club are on the verge of the Playoffs of the Conference North and with one of the strongest squads Llanelian Road has seen we have been playing superb football. We are only two divisions from The Football League 2 which is Full Time, Professional Football. The Club are seriously onto something of a serious acheivement, to go from surviving relegation to chasing a spot down in the playoffs all just over a year underneath Frank Sinclairs leadership.
