Colwyn Bay travel to Europa League participants Bala Town for a testimonial game for Lakesiders manager and Seagulls legend Colin Caton on Saturday. Colin joined the Bay from Rhyl in 1992, and apart from a brief spell with Witton Albion, was a commanding central defender in the Bay’s Northern Premier League Premier Division side during the Bryn Jones era. Colin succeeded long-serving Bryn as manager in 2001 and was in charge for two seasons.
“I think I was at Colwyn Bay for 11 or 12 years in all. It’s a club that will always be in my heart,” Colin said. “I got sold to Witton Albion when I was at Colwyn Bay and I didn’t want to go.”
Since leaving the Bay in 2003, Colin has been manager of Bala Town and in his time at Maes Tegid, he has overseen the club’s rise from the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) to the Welsh Premier League and a place in this season’s Europa League. Bala beat Estonian side Levadia Tallinn 1-0 in the first leg of their first qualifying round tie before bowing out of the competition following a 3-1 second leg defeat.
Saturday’s testimonial will also see a reunion of former players Colin has played alongside and managed.
