Pipped by the post in Bala defeat

THE Seagulls were unlucky to twice see the ball rebound off a post as they were denied a draw that their second half performance deserved in a 2-1 defeat against Europa League qualifiers Bala Town.

Two goals in the space of three minutes by former Bay favourite Ian Sheridan gave Bala the edge in the first half, after Colwyn Bay had started brightly with Danny Andrews having a shot saved and Louis Corrigan firing narrowly over the bar.  However, the Seagulls regrouped and after Will Jones had pulled a goal back with an acrobatic overhead kick straight after the interval, they took the game to Bala in the second half and were unfortunate not to get an equaliser.

When Bala keeper Craig Vernon palmed out a header from a Bay corner, the ball rebounded off a defender onto the post before being scrambled clear, and then Kyle Armstrong also saw a header strike the same upright and rebound to safety from another corner.

Bala rarely threatened in the second half, while Burnett had a shot deflected for a corner and Rhys Bowers went close with a header and a fierce shot from 20 yards that just cleared the crossbar.

In what was a very entertaining game, manager Paul Moore said he was pleased with the way the players responded after going 2-0 down and that the side was continuing to make progress.

“We are getting there,” he said. “Bala are a very good side who have already had competitive football in the Europa League, so overall I was pleased with the way we competed against them,” he said.

“I was disappointed with their two goals. I thought the first was offside and our heads went down a bit and allowed them to get a second very quickly afterwards.

“But we regrouped well and  in the second half were unlucky not to take something from the game.”

The Seagulls are next in action at home to a Manchester City All Stars team on Saturday (July 30, 2pm kick off), followed by an away game at Rhyl next Tuesday.
