THREE goals in the space of eleven first half minutes gave the Seagulls a 3-2 victory over Airbus UK Broughton in their penultimate pre-season friendly (Aug 1st).
Airbus had taken a 12th minute lead with a Leo Riley free kick, but Colwyn Bay dominated the last 20 minutes of the first half after Jamie Rainford beat the keeper to a long ball into the area and rolled it into an unguarded net on 25 minutes.
Rainford missed a good chance to add a second when he pulled his shot wide after being teed up by Jack Hindle, but minutes later he returned the compliment with a chipped pass which put Hindle clear and he finished well to put the Bay 2-1 up on 32 minutes.
Four minutes later Astley Mulholland ran on to Kyle Jacobs’ pass before beating a defender inside the area and firing past former Wrexham keeper Andy Coughlin for Bay’s third.
Some excellent attacking play, with Astley Mulholland and Jack Hindle looking particularly dangerous, saw the Seagulls well on top at the break, with Hindle also firing a good chance over the bar after being teed up by Mulholland’s run and pass.
With eight second half changes the Bay didn’t pose the same threat after the break, although Jack Kelleher had a good chance to increase the lead when he broke clear inside the area only for his shot to be deflected over the bar off the advancing keeper’s body.
Ex-Seagull Obi Anorou pulled a goal back for Airbus on 72 minutes, but the Seagulls saw out time for the victory.
There was worrying moment when Louis Barnes looked to be hurt in a 50-50 tackle and was taken off, but thankfully he reported later that although he had stud marks down his leg there was no other injury.
The Seagulls squad for the game was: Matt Cooper, Kyle Jacobs, Louis Barnes, Luke Horrocks, Sam Barnes Josh Brizell, Jack Hindle, Will Booth, Jamie Rainford, Astley Mulholland, Shaun Holden, Jack Kelleher, Nat Kerr, Warren Bellew, Danny Andrews, Mike Pino, Gaz Grant, Dan Collins, Liam Turner. Subs not used: Kris Leigh, Anthony Griffith, Danny Bartle.
The Bay’s last pre-season fixture is at home to Evo-stik South side Romulus from the West Midlands on Saturday (August 5th, 3pm kick off).
